The Following table was hijacked from NorcalJack on SDSUfans.com. It looks like he has done a great job of keeping track of everything. These standings are as of May 5th.

Just by glancing at this, we will never be able to compete for the cup without adding sports. If you take out Womens and Mens Tennis and Womens and Mens S&D the top of the Standings look like this.

Adjusted Standings without Tennis or S&D
1. ORU 80.5
2. SDSU 80
3. NDSU 75.5
4. WIU 71.5
5. OU 69

Adjusted Standings with Womens and Mens Tennis
(assuming we finish in the middle of the standings)

1. ORU 95.5
2. WIU 91.5
3. SDSU 88
4. NDSU 83.5
5. OU 83

I don't see NDSU adding Mens Soccer or S&D anytime soon because of obvious obstacles. I also realize that we need to be fully funded in all sports before we talk about adding more sports. However, by adding Mens and Womens tennis we would have enough sports to compete for the cup even though the decked would be stacked against us as we would be 3 sports behind. By the way, the Valley sponsors the exact same sports that the SUMMIT sponsors and will soon sponsor Football.

Are the point totals actually cumulative? I know in some conferences they only use X number of sports per team.

The Cup is not big deal to me since NDSU does not support a full complement of teams. In the words of Al Davis, "Just win, baby" in the sports that we do have!!

Yeah, overall trophies are nice, but a large display of conference championships is just as impressive. We'll soon find out if NDSU will have five for this season.

It looks to me that only WIU offers all of the sports. Cup leader ORU sponsors three fewer sports. I personally think it is a big deal and don't think that we need add sports to win it. If we win league championships in the sports that have a full complement of teams i.e BB we would earn 10 pts. if we were to add men's swimming for example we would only earn 5 pts due to the lack of participation. NDSU can win the commisions cup and it should be a big deal. I understand that there are other important things to accomplish (a FB championship, MBB NCAA bid) but this should be another to measure our overall athletic success.

Anybody have the time/desire to do an average point total?

It would be interesting to compare that to the the cumulative totals.

Since there is already some correction built into the system, I'm not sure how accurate this is. But since we're not professional statisticians, here goes.

School Points Sports Adj Pts
1. ORU 106.5 16 6.66
2. NDSU 87.5 14 6.25
3. SUU 82 14 5.86
4. WIU 102.5 19 5.39
5. SDSU 94.5 18 5.25
6. Oak 85.5 18 4.75
7. IUPUI 58 14 4.14
8. IPFW 61 15 4.07
