Hey did you see the sports feature the other night about the new FM semi pro football team? Tony Stauss is on the roster as QB and I thought they said they are playing at the MSU field (Nemzek?). Who else is in the league and what is their schedule?

What a great choice of entertainment now for the FM area, the Liberty semi pro football team, the FM Redhawks semi pro baseball team, the soon to be Fargo Force Hockey team (FM Force?) plus all the great college sports including the Gateway Conference title challenger NDSU BISON!!!! First time season tickets for this Bison fan (& wife) we cant wait till Bison football starts!

The big problem with this team is the fact that they play their games on Saturday nights. I'm not positive, but I don't think there are a lot of people in town on the weekends in Fargo. I mean I know there are those who don't go to the lakes, but does it leave enough to support a football team? Then there are the Redhawks... that's gonna be tough to compete with.

I'm fairly certain the Liberty guys aren't getting paid anything to play. It's an opportunity for them to showcase their talent to arena leagues, or other interested leagues, that send scouts to the games.

Detroit Lakes has a new team also, they will be playing at the Frazee High School field, I think.

More info:

The Fargo-Moorhead Liberty, a semi-pro football team, will start their inaugural season vs. the Nebraska Lightning on May 10. Kickoff is at 1:00pm at Alex Nemzek Field, on the campus of Moorhead State University-Moorhead. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for those 12 and under, and are available at the gate.
The FM Liberty is the first semi-professional football team to play in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Players are playing solely for the love of the game and/or the opportunity to further their careers. They are not paid.
All season long, the Liberty is offering a free ticket to any future game for all fans in attendance if the team does not pass for 500 yards or more that game.
The coaching staff is led by Dale Heffron, who has an extensive football background including having played for the NFL’s Oakland Raiders and the CFL’s BC Lions. Also on the coaching staff are Jon Saunders; Brett Aamot; (former Atlanta Falcon and Minnesota Viking) Craig Sauer; and former NDSU players Dale Nordick and Don Siverson.
The team is made up largely of former area college players, including starting quarterback Tony Stauss, who played for the NDSU Bison during the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Stauss was the Bison’s starting quarterback for their inaugural Division I game on August 30, 2003, after transferring following two seasons with Northwestern of the Big Ten Conference.
The Liberty will play a 12-game schedule that includes 10 games that are part of conference play. The Liberty will play in the Northern Power Football League. Every Liberty game will be broadcast on TheFAN 740AM, with former NFL player and CBS Sports Analyst Irv Cross as part of the broadcast team. Their 2008 schedule (home games in bold):
May 10 FM Liberty vs. Nebraska (7pm, at MSUM)
May 17 FM Liberty at Rochester Giants (in Rochester, MN)
May 24 FM Liberty at Duluth Superior Shoremen (in Duluth, MN)
May 31 FM Liberty at Farmington Lions (in Farmington, MN)
June 7 FM Liberty vs. Willmar Mustangs (game time and location TBD)
June 14 FM Liberty vs. Lakes Area Screaming Eagles (game time and location TBD)
June 21 FM Liberty vs. South Metro Dragons (game time and location TBD)
July 5 BYE WEEK
July 12 FM Liberty vs. Northern Terror (game time and location TBD)
July 19 FM Liberty at Willmar Mustangs (in Willmar, MN)
July 26 FM Liberty at Lakes Area Screaming Eagles (in Detroit Lakes, MN)
August 2 FM Liberty vs. South Metro Dragons (game time and location TBD)
Potential playoff games will be played on August 9, and the League Championship Game will be held on August 16.
The team’s website is www.FargoMoorheadLiberty.com. The team’s Official Charity is Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

In Bison history, I'll mark Tony down as one of my favorites for one reason -- the Montana game.

Silencing the home crowd in Missoula was worth its weight in gold. It signaled the new era.

Doesnt this league have some kind of deal that if they dont pass for a certain number of yards they give things away? I swear I heard that but maybe I'm just going crazy. Maybe both. Anyway if that is the case I would expect to see the ball in the air a ton.

I heard the Liberty were doing that, don't think it's a league-wide deal.

Honeydew weekend. Was still digging in the dirt at kickoff. I also did some online digging. Found the 15-13 score (Giants over Liberty, the difference being a saftey) on a fan board.

"Fargo Moorehead Liberty 13
Rochester Giants 15

Very tough game, Liberty are a great group, very talented.
it was cold...rainy, we had a dust bowl, windy.....
Thank you for coming down to Rochester.

This box score is the best I could remember...forgive me if I am off a little
*****1st 2nd 3rd 4th F
Giants 7---2-----0---6 15
Liberty 7---0-----6---0 13 "

Nothing is posted on the Giants home page at this time. Please note, the Giants have won 5 Great Plains Football League championships and are considered one of the better semi pro teams. It appears the Liberty (the attached post and scoring) gave the Giants all they could handle.

Story from the Post Bulletin: 15-13 come from behind victory for the Giants.

....

"But providing just as big a jolt was Rochester's opponent. The Giants have abandoned their previous Great Plains Football League -- one they had so thoroughly dominated -- for an independent schedule. It's one that is riddled with major tests. Possibly the biggest one was coming on opening-night, with the highly regarded Fargo Moorhead Liberty leading things off. The Liberty have a number of former players from Division IAA college North Dakota State. That includes their quarterback, Tony Stauss, a one-time starter at Big Ten school Northwestern before transferring to NDSU."

Let me know if an ID is required. I can find another way to share this information

I swear I read that on the Liberty's website at one time, but I can't seem to find it now. I remember thinking it was just ridiculous though, something like if they didn't throw for at least 500 yards anyone there got in to the next game free or something like that.

I believe the 500 yard passing commitment was for the first game of the season. I thought there was a reference to achieving the 500 yards passing in the Forum writeup on May 11 (will cost you $2.95 to read today).

The first game was advertised as such, then I remember hearing coach quotes talking about everygame... no idea if that's accurate though.

My understanding of it is that if they do not pass for over 500 yds in a home game those in attendance will get into the next home game free of charge.

The 500 yards is for every game. If they don't pass for 500 then everyone in attendance receives a free ticket for another game.

I saw a billboard up in Moorhead yesterday advertising it.
