With only one game left to schedule, the new coach will have one less worry to deal with. Looks like a decent schedule to me. Only one non-counter in the regular season, a Big Sky, two MVCs, and a Big Ten.

Nov 27-29 – @Oahu Classic

Dec 06 – Centenary College

Dec 20 – Utah Valley State
Dec 21 – Jamestown College
Dec 28 – Creighton University

Jan 03 – @Oakland
Jan 05 – @IPFW
Jan 10 – Western Illinois
Jan 12 – IUPUI

Not much practice time to get ready for an early, and tough, game
at Minnesota.
Two league games, then a full month away from the league.
I wish there were a way for better scheduling, though I'm not
sure how'd you move those 2 early games. ??
Not much for non-conf. road games. Maybe the one to be
yet announced will be a semi-close road game?

The Summit League sets the dates for the conference games. There is nothing NDSU can do to change that. Compared to last year's home games, this is a big improvement.

The non-con schedule looks good enough, but I'd like to see Jamestown College taken off there. I would replace Jamestown with Mary if I could. At least they're NSIC. NSIC is fine. I was hoping that we would never have to play any DAC school in any sports ever again...

BTW, NDB2, that is a KICK-ASS sig line!!!!!!:D

If this tourney is a no go, hopefully we can fill the slots with something else.

This may be true for men's basketball and definitely true for football but i don't think it's true for women's basketball. Especially next year, with a Bison team not projected to do as well. And the Gophers average 6,000+ for homegames.

We have got to quit playing the mary's, crookstons, valley city's, and jamestowns of the world. Exhibition or not. These are bush league, we might as well play Fargo South High.

I think Mary will give the Bison all they want and more for an exhibition game. They almost beat Montana State last year and swept MSUM, who if I remember correctly beat the Bison in 06-07 year's exhibition. They have a number of Mandan players on their team who could just as easily be suited up in the green and gold. We'll see. Now, Crookston, Valley City and Jamestown, that's another story and I completely agree, those teams need to get off the schedule - what possible good does it do for either team to play in a 50 point blowout? (Although the JC game 2 years ago was only 22 points). Compare the Bison's schedule with SDSU's schedule: Missouri, Wisconsin(at SDSU), Utah(home), Oregon(home),Minnesota,Gonzaga,Cal-Davis(home),Valpo(home). Now that's a schedule you'd want to go watch - Big 10, Big 12, Mountain West, Pac-10. Not the Dak 10. Couple of years ago they played USC at home, and also played Virginia, Kansas, Baylor, Colorado, Alabama, Marquette, etc. Yes we occassionaly get a team like this on our schedule - Alabama, Minnesota, etc, but overall its not even close. If the Bison and the Jacks are recruiting the same player, which schedule looks more enticing? The Wisconsin Badgers at home or the Valley City Vikings? Hmm tough one. Plus Fargo South already had their schedule filled;)

MHDBisonfan
08-22-2008, 07:27 PM
OK, I have to rant about our schedule again. :ranting:

SDSU: Missouri, Wisconsin, Utah, Oregon, Minnesota, Illinois, Maryland

USD: Colorado State, North Carolina

UND: Wyoming, Arkansas, Northwestern, +?? at Iowa State tourney

NSDU: Minnesota, Georgetown, Wyoming, Creighton

This is just ridiculous that we cannot get better "name" teams from bigger conferences on our schedule. Why are UxD's playing SEC, ACC teams, while we are playing Jamestown and Valley City?

OK, end of rant :banghead:

Punishing a new coach and a bunch of new players, especially when they probably had very little say on determining the schedule, seems a bit mean-spirited and counter productive to me.

I am a fan of women's bb from way back to the days of SU dominating DII. I have been to many SU women's games over the past 25-35 years. Been doing some reading here. Last year SU beat Jamestown by 22 I believe. I will go against the common wisdom here and predict the game this year will be closer than that. Correct me if I am wrong but it seems like the Bison teams of 15-20 years ago would beat the current versions. Let's hope there is a marked improvement this year.

Well, we're losing 4 starters....that would impact most teams right there. I think there will be some struggles because there are a lot of inexperienced players going to be expected to make big contributions. Plus a new coach, with a new style, and new way of doing things. I don't think it's unexpected that the team will struggle.

Regarding teams from 15-20 years ago vs today....I think the game is so different and the environment is way different. The Bison domnated back then because we had one or two or three women that could dribble and chew gum at the same time which wasn't the case with most other teams at our level. 15 -20 years back Division II teams were comprised of players that may have 3 months of basketball a year for 4-5 years of basketball. Now most teams have kids that play ball 9 months out of the year. There are a lot more talented kids around in the pool. I think it's good when we get kids like Birkel and this Linz kid next year who are at the top of regional rankings.

Back to the question, I think the teams of the 80s would not beat last year's team.

I would agree that today's players are more athletic. 6ft guards were hard to find 15 years ago for instance. I would give the past players more credit though. They were pretty darn tough and had an attitude in a good way. I think the Bison didn't evaluate talent very well (recruit well) for a number of years. Moorhead State was tougher in the exhibition game last year or the year before. Shut NDSU down. The current versions can look real good or not so good. If the girls don't play inspired ball the can be embarrassed. Now, I would like to believe that things are on the way up and look forward to watching them.

Had Nadine Schmidt in class at NDSU.....those championship teams of the early 90's would beat the Bison teams of the last few yrs. They had a confidence about them...they felt like they could beat anyone.

The llate 80's/90's teams would beat them soundly. You are overestimating the value of AAU's, and underestimating the flat out athletic ability of the late 1980's - 1990's group. Actually DII was more competitive during the 80s/90's than DII is today before the NCAA started to dilute the talent through lowering the # of scholarships, etc. Morlock, Schmidt, Rademacher, DeVries, Roufs, Buck, Evan, Smykowski, Kramer...come on, lets get real. Most of the lower rated DI conferences (such as the Summit) would not have placed a team in the top 3 of the old NCC during that time.
BUT I love the Bison, and I can hardly wait for the new season!

Roufs would nail a few of the ones around now and

Yes, important additions that I missed in my list. Too bad we have no time transporter to see how this would work out! I know the fans/players of today don't like to hear it, but lower level (yes, sorry, the Summit league is one of the bottom 15 conferences in the Nation for DI) is a lower level of basketball than the top level DII conferences were, before the best conferences split up to go DI. It should tell you a great deal when we went into the Summit and we were immediately a top 2 - 3 team just coming out of Division II transition - with a team of great young woman but not the best athletes or ball players to play at NDSU. We owe them a debt of gratitude for toughing out those transition years. Great commitment and great work from that group.

Important to note that I am saying that the current players are very good but some older versions were exceptional. Competition is also much better. Overall, I think the talent pool is much larger now. There isn't much difference between the top junior/senior players in DII and even NAIA and the freshman players at NDSU. These same players at NDSU then become better at college because they work at it 4-6 hours a day and they have more potential coming in.

While the Bison had some great players in the past, they put up huge numbers and wins against teams that didn't have top personnel. Kacey Morlock is a great player but she put up numbers against posts that were 2-3 inches shorter than her. How effective would she be in a league like the Summit where everyone has a number of players 6-1 or taller?
