Kolpack has a nice column on Mertens today. Kid sounds like a natural Leader, Walker was great, but I can't wait to see a 6'1", 215lb, mobile QB in the backfield!

I think most fans have confidence in Mertens. It's the lack of depth and the fact the coaching staff didn't recruit a QB for two years that scares some of us. I have sensed very little apprehension regarding Mertens as the QB. He'll be a dandy.

Are you being sarscastic?

Mertens is 6'1" and gargantuan compared to Brecke and the new scholie QB from CA (Mohler), both of those guys about 5'11", and maybe not that tall.

So, if you think he is kind of short, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Why do you think they recruited all of the OL this past season who are 6'2" instead of the 6'4" to 6'6" they had been recruiting?

No, I wasn't being sarcastic. Size does matter at quaterback and height for a pocket passer is important. However, as I said, it is the only knock I can make against him. Many quaterbacks succeed who are short like Mertens (ie Walker as I said); it is just not ideal.

Given our lack of depth at QB (due solely to, and I reiterate this again ad nauseum, the lack of this staff's ability to recruit a QB in 2006 and 2007), something like this scares me to death:

i think it would be tough to recruit a QB if there isnt immediate playing time, it takes a strong willed kid to sit for 2 or 3 years and bust his ass day in and day out in practice to sit on the bench and wait around for his chance, but i guess thats part of the game

We have two other quarterbacks that can be pulled from the defense and both were pretty damn good in HS. (Eaves and Belmont) We did sign a QB last year (Eaves), we just chose to use his talents elsewhere. Belmont was Mr. Everything for his HS team. However, I do think that it would be in the best interrest of NDSU to see if they couldn't get a JUCO quarterback over the spring and summer as an insurance policy. It seemed to work out pretty well for Cal Poly.

I doubt very much there is a JUCO QB worth having at this point in time.

My understanding is that they offered a QB in 2007, but only one, and couldn't land him. But, that is all I was told, which doesn't mean much.

I doubt very, very much that playing time would have been an issue in landing a QB in 2007 since that person would be a soph when they would be given their shot at the reins. So, yes, I do think it is an "inability" to recruit a QB, in my opinion.

But, I have been the lone voice of concern about the lack of a QB recruit in 2006 and 2007, so obviously that concern is misplaced and NDSU will be fine. (And I know we will be fine as long as Mertens can play 30 straight games!)

But, Bohl himself said the QB is the most important position, in commenting at the end of last season what Walker has meant to the program. I just don't understand if that is true, and if he really meant what he said, how the coaches can go two recruiting seasons without either landing a QB or trying to get a QB. Now we are down to two with two true freshmen coming in. I simply can't make sense of it, that's all.

So, Lone Voice of Concern, outside of wringing your hands, what do you propose? You are all keen on pointing out that this coach can't recruit a quarterback; something we have all read over and over and over. You enjoy thowing water on every suggested ulternative. Nothing I have written, or anybody else that I can see, questions Mertens and his ability to lead the team. Get off that subject for crying out loud. The question is about depth, and what happens if he gets hurt. I don't understand how many of you cannot seem to understand that.

NDSU does have Brecke at #2, yes, and I don't know anything about him, haven't seen him play. After that its true freshmen, so I am concerned about the lack of depth/experience at the QB position after those two, plain and simple.

And I am not, as has been suggested, wringing my hands. I simply posted an link for an article about Florida State's QB woes continuing because their #1 got hurt during spring practice and I shudder to think what the season would be like if either one of our QBs get hurt in spring or fall practice given the razor thin depth. It's a simple observation and expression of concern, not hand-wringing. There's a big difference between the two.

One for five?

Lots of work ahead of Nick to be competitive at this level on a consistent basis.

I would argue that 1 / 5 isn't too indicative of the way he'll play in the next 20 games. If he is consistently overthrowing receivers, passing into double coverage, or tossing up rainbows when panicked, then I'd be a little concerned. Nobody's brought up any serious issues. We can all relax - there is plenty of time for everything to fall into place. Let the Big Red Panic Button continue to gather dust and cobwebs.

I think all this worry about Mertens is needless.
