Hey Bison.

I'm the admin over at WyoNation (http://www.wyonation.com) and it did in fact look like NMSU fell through, from what I've been reading. I think NDSU is a nice last minute pickup.. and I know you guys are tough, and travel with a nice herd. I'm also a Montana Grizzly fan, so boo on you guys for beating us at our house. I dunno if you'll have the same luck in Laramie, but you guys have proven to be giant killers.

I'd say if you're gonna go to Laramie for the game, just fly Fargo to Laramie and rent a car. Much cheaper that way. It's only about 2 hours from Denver to Laramie.. not a huge deal. And again, if you want to stop by to visit some Wyoming fans, or talk some smack, stop by WyoNation. Relatively new, but we do have the nicest front page! :) Good luck, Bison.

Friday, September 12...Fly to Denver from Fargo, rent car and drive to Laramie

Saturday, September 13...Tailgate at War Memorial Stadium, watch Bison win, celebrate said victory, pass out

Sunday, September 14...Wake up hungover, but happy, drive back to Denver, watch the Colorado Rockies play the Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field, catch late flight from Denver to Fargo

Monday, September 15...Take day off and hang out on Bisonville

Could be a fun late-summer trip!

When it comes to tailgating in Laramie, it's not like tailgating in Fargo or Missoula.. they have "rules." Gotta plan your tailgating accordingly. You can only tailgate in certain areas, gotta be a Cowboy Joe member to do so.. but if the WyoNation crew plans a trip to Laramie, we'll arrange something w/ Bisonville to tailgate. Don't you worry.

I've been wondering the same thing. It'll be interesting to see what he's planning, what he has to say, etc...

On a side note, I tasked some of my best and brightest operators with confirming that all is ok with him. They were able to get a screen-cap* from his webcam. It appears that he might pull through any technical difficulties he's experiencing and make it to the game...

Bison"FANatic"
03-11-2008, 03:26 PM
Well we will find out how well our 2 and 3 deep position players are. Our O-line is going to have to be very good and is going to have to go very deep. You start playing at 7200ft and it will tire even the most finely tuned athletes.
Hey I'm no coach but this could be a very good game for the rest of the year as our 2nd and 3rd strings are forced to step up and give the starters a breather. Roehl, Paschell, Blinco and Mcnorton will step up to the plate I just hope we can open the holes for them all game long. Mertens arm could take a lot of pressure off of these guys.

Looks like a Pro set offense with a 3-4 defense

A Junior QB with 2 Junior RB's accounted for most of the offense. QB threw more INT than TD's. It didn't look like they throw to the TE but a fair number of different receivers caught balls.

I'm looking at a road trip. I've cruised to Camp Guernsey several times over the years and it doesn't feel like too bad of a drive. Methinks that Laramie is just over an hour farther down the road. Mapquest puts it at 10 hrs 16 minutes from Bismarck. I think your guess of 9 hours or so is more accurate.

Also, remember all the sights along the way. There is an entire summer between now and kickoff. That leaves an opportunity to plan for some pretty good times... size of pocketbook permitting, of course.http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff311/indio_rojas/Smilies/SmiliesThumbsupa.gif

Lakes, I spoke to Burgundy and Ricky....they said they would "Let you know." Not sure what that was all about.

Sounds like they are booking their flights and taking in the Rockies on Friday night and Sunday afternoon.....and waiting on the Broncos schedule to be posted. Could be a fun weekened. Can't wait.

Wyoming is in a transition year as far as offense. We just lured in Bob Cole, who runs a Florida style of offense, maybe a little less QB running. He coached the offense at Montana in 99 under Glenn. He coached the O at Utah State (in the Kevin Curtis days) under Mick Dennehy. We run a 3-4 defense that's pretty much bad ass. We have damn fine linebackers, and the defense was ranked in the top 10 in the country mid-season last year.. before they fell a part in the second half.

Again, if you plan on going to Laramie, it's much easier to fly to Denver then drive up to Laramie.. quick drive. You'd be on a tiny little puddle jumper from Laramie to Denver that will fill up VERY fast. Someone mentioned Corona Village.. YES! That place is great. War Memorial is a nice, historic stadium, and don't bother packing the stadium with gold, lest you forget, Wyoming is also gold. :)

If I am somehow able to get that scholarship and grant I have been applying for to go through, I will fly to this game. I'll make it a one-day thing, since I don't want to spend the night. Flight early on Sat. morning to Denver, drive to game, tailgate, watch the guys win, eat dinner, drive to Denver, fly back to Fargo late at night. Maybe I'll arrive at Hector at the same time the team arrives to congratulate them.:D

That's only IF I get that scholarship and grant. If I'm in the same financial position in Sept. that I'm in now, it'll be webcast or (pray) TV for me.

One thing that has me mildly concerned is the 7200 ft elevation. I've done a lot of hiking in the Rockies over the years and getting acclimated for a few days is important. Granted, 7200 isn't like 10,000 but that thin air is still noticeable. I hope the trainers don't underestimate this.

I personally don't notice any difference until close to 10,000 feet. I've been out in the Rockies several times, and when I'm in Denver for example, I feel like I'm breathing just fine. I've been to Laramie, and I don't recall having any breathing issues. The upper deck at The War is really steep though, so hang onto the railings if you're up there!!:D

I guess where I noticed it was the first day or two when we were out hiking. Early hikes were usually around 10 miles with day packs. Those hikes were harder then the later in the week ones that were 14-15 miles. And I'll grant you, 40 years of age isn't like 20.

If you guys are going to go hiking in Wyo, I would recomend Medicine-Bow Peaks. They're not far from Laramie. Some of the prettiest landscape you'll ever see.

As for the game itself. Joe will have his guys ready. I don't mean to sound negative but I'll count this one for the Cowboys. I do see it as a close game.

I really didn't notice much difference until I was above 10,000 ft. Above 12,000 I really started to feel like my boots were made of concrete.

Rocky Mountain National Park is probably a little under two hours from Laramie. A summit attempt for Longs Peak (the mountain on the Colorado quarter) might be pushing it for a little late in the season, but there are plenty of other great hikes. The Twin Sisters is a decent little dayhike (about 7.5 miles roundtrip)with a summit elevation of 11,428 (only 2,428 feet of elevation gain) and some great views of Longs Peak.

How does the landscape compare to The Tetons or for that matter, Anaconda or Glacier in Montana? Really, the nicest is Rocky Mountain NP in Colorado, but I've been there a few times already and don't want to go back there.

I live about 45 minutes from Rocky Mountain National Park. However, it kills me to say this but Wyoming mountains such as the Tetons are much prettier. I only mentiond Medicine-Bow Peak because it's so close to Laramie. I've back-packed in that area, it's great!

The good thing, NDSU1980, is that the older you get, the more your body can handle things like this. That's why it's easier for say a 50 year old to climb Everest than it is for say a 20 year old. Physiologically speaking, you either have more O2 carrying cells or it takes you a shorter amount of time to make those extra O2 carrying cells -- I'd have to go back to my Phys Ecology notes to make sure.

Have to see what the wife says about that one being a 9 hour drive.

Haven't done much packing in Colorado, but Wyo is tough to beat. Cloud Peak Wilderness is on the way down from ND, just a little West of Rapid City. Did the Grand Tetons about 14 years ago, nothing else like them. I thought the best was the Wind River Range down in the SW corner of Wyo., did that about 2 years ago. It is a huge area and we were there for a week and barely scratched the surface. I am going to work a 2-3 day outing on the way down to the game if I can. It's all good!

Thanks for the info. One thing that always worries me about wilderness areas is access. That was our problem in Anaconda. Mainly rocky, dirt roads, if you can call them that for 10 miles until you get to the trail head. Also, With Cloud Peak wilderness are we talking trails that can be day hiked, 10 -15 miles? We don't do the overnight on the trail, but rather tent in what ever campground is near by. Thanks for the info.

I haven't been to too many wilderness areas that you don't have 5 - 10 miles of washboard covered gravel roads, not 4 wheel drive only though, as probably the majority of people going out would never have access. We always camp in the back country, that's the best part. If I do some on this trip it would be camping in close proximity to the trail head and doing day hikes with light / fanny packs from there so I can get out on the road faster.

I think your Wyoming geography is a little off. Cloud Peak wilderness is in north central Wyoming in the Big Horn Mtn. range.. nice country in there (where I grew up), but that'd be going WAY out of the way to go from ND to Laramie. Wind River Range, in west/central Wyoming is also nice, but I'm a bigger fan of Cloud Peak. If you want to see mountains, Tetons are the way to go, but that's no where near Laramie. :)

For quick hikes near Laramie, try the Snowy Range, or even Medicine Bow Range.

No offense, but 75-100 miles isn't what I consider way out of my way. If you're already driving 11 hours, it's all kind of relative. Have done Cloud about 5 or 6 times over the last 10 years. Thanks for the info on the stuff around Laramie though, may have to check it out.

Not quite sure what you are trying to consider as the Tetons, but they are easily a 300 mile drive from Laramie. I think you are thinking of the Wind River Range but even they are over 150 mile from Laramie.

Stay in touch on the road trip. I've got 6 or 7 interested in going down, perhaps we can get a nice caravan of green and gold out of Bismarck/Mandan.
