If you haven't seen this, you need to watch this. Pay attention to all the blood on the ice in the first video. My goodness. I read on cnnsi.com that he is doing well after life saving surgery. Keep him and his family in your prayers. What a freak injury.....

He could have very well died from this. However it is not a Todd Burtuzi situation. It was a freak accident and had nothing to do with goon behavior or anything like that.

Nasty. Hopefully he makes a full recovery.

Didn't this sort of thing happen to a goalie back in the late 80's? Possibly UND or the North Stars (white/green jersey is all I remember)?

It happened to a Buffalo Sabres goalie birthday boy. Zednik is currently stable and able to talk according to his doctors. They said it could've been much worse and if they wouldn't have treated him as fast as they did he might be dead right now. A Canadian cable tv station is reporting the skate just missed the jugular. Here's the video of the former Sabres goalie- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdt8nDOY9fk&feature=related (may be disturbing to some people, seriously) Tommorow all players should be required to tell neck guards and visors. I was a team doc for a college level hockey team and I got lots of game time experience with sutures, knee injuries, etc. Some of the lacerations were by the neck or face. At times I wondered how it would go down if someone took a skate to the neck or to another large artery. WOW!

Great job to the medical staff at both incidents described above.

ESPN's First Take talked with the local hockey beat writer and he reported that, while the on-site doctors and medics hadn't trained for this particular type of injury(it's so rare), they handled it absolutely perfectly and definitely saved his life. The docs managed to stop the bleeding within minutes, while he was still in the facility. By the time he was transported to the hospital, he was largely stabilized. The reporter said the place was just dead for the next 15 minutes, until it was announced that he was doing okay. They finished the game, but no one, including the players, really remembers it; they played in a mental fog. BTW, the cut was by one of his own teammates(just to reinforce the "no dirty hit" message); just a freak hit.

Now, I'm no stranger to blood, but that was just ... yeesh.
