The Bison men will face IUPUI thursday night in Indianapolis. The Jaguars were the preseason pick to win the conference. Their games are held in a huge facility in downtown Indianapolis! Capacity is 2000!

George Hill of IUPUI was named Summit League player of the week. He only managed 34 points against UMKC and 30 points against SUU last week.

Two thoughts:

IUPUI's gym is the exact equivalent of most high school gyms in the country. A 120x120 box with a set of 16-row pull-out bleachers on either side. All the schools in the Classic Lake HS conference in the Twin Cities have bigger and nicer gyms. Their gym would be one of the worst in the NSIC. That's how bad their facility is.

We may get beaten bad in this one. IUPUI is currently the Summit's frontronner for the Big Dance, and they have not lost many OOC games. I hope we can keep this one at leats close. IUPUI plays with a big inside presence, and we honestly don't have as big of an inside presence as we did last year with Dre. If we win, I'll be surprised.

Get beaten badly? This IUPUI we are talking about not UCLA. They haven't lost many OOC games but they also haven't played very many good OOC teams. Besides beating a very good UMASS team their best win is over #185 Western Michigan by 8 points at home. This should be a close game and one that NDSU needs to win if we have any hopes and dreams of getting a piece of the Summit title this year. I won't predict a win but if we get blown out I'll be suprised. Not even Chicago State got blown out by this team.

Just a hunch, but if we can compete with teams like Florida and Cal I'm not to worried about getting blown out by IUPUI. However, getting a win out of the deal isn't going to be easy. They are good.

What the Bison have a hard time matching up with is a dominating inside presence. IUPUI's "big men" are 6'7". They have a 7 footer, but he averages 8 minutes a game and really only plays in blowout wins so I'm guessing he is a non-factor for the most part.

Stumbled onto this chat on ESPN.com with Kyle Whelliston(Mid-Major hoops expert) and I asked for his take on the game tomorrow.....

Josh (Fargo, ND): Being new to the Summit League and not knowing much about IUPUI what is your take on the NDSU at IUPUI matchup tomorrow night?

Kyle Whelliston: (4:56 PM ET ) We had an IUPUI day here at .Com yesterday, both Katz and I blogged on them. They're incredibly good shooters, although they may be suspect against good speed, which your Bison are capable of. I'm expecting a real 80's or 90's shootout tomorrow.

They are tough and I'm sure playing in that tiny gym won't exactly be easy. Saul has said a few times that we need to take this one to be the team we want to be. Should be close if the team plays a good game, could be a real barn burner to listen to.

Probably getting ready for the plane and bus trip. They are flying to Chicago, getting a bus to Indy, then driving to WIU on friday, then back to Chicago to fly back home. They are trying to eliminate a lot of wasted time in airports. With the direct flights to and from Chicago, it makes it much easier.

Hey, that's just what I think. IUPUI gave us our biggest beating so far in-conference. Scott Miller said they were the #2 FT shooting team in the country, and #7 in the nation defending the three ball. I would pick them to win the conference out of Oakland, IUPUI, ORU.

They are also behind Notre Dame, Butler and Ball State. They do a good job identifying the local kids who aren't getting looks from the big schools for some reason. Ron Hunter is an awesome coach who everyone thought would be gone by now. He took the team to the NCAA tournament in their first year of eligibility (2003) and everyone thought he would be gone then. I think it would be great if Saul could find some players down here. The benefit of joining the Summit is the Bison will be playing several places with a lot of talent (Indy, Detroit, Kansas City, Illinois). That is much better than what they would have found in the Big Sky. We'll see if it pays off!

We were not ready for their match-up zone. Did not see the traps coming soon enough, picked up dribble in the corners and just plain were not good at flashing to the ball or the open areas soon enough to pass out the traps.

The match-up is very difficult when you face the kind of athletes IUPUI has. Anytime the ball goes to the floor you can expect a trap. It takes quick ball movement. If there is a double team someone is open. We need to get better at this as we will see more and more zone if we continue show a weakness against it.

Going 4 for 17 from three didn't help either.

We've had as many as 60 or 70 at Bison-Sioux satellite games. Most of them come to Indy to work for Lilly (drug company known for Prozac and Cialis) or Dow Agrosciences (farm chemicals). I think the official list is around 100 alums within a 100 mile radius. I know there were some family members in attendance as well. I thought it was a nice showing.

I took some photos at the IUPUI game although most did not turn out well. We have a nice SLR digital camera and I'm still learning how to use it in certain settings. There were a few worth publishing so I posted them online. Check them out here (http://www.fedjefamily.net/iupui_ndsu.html)

Wow, that was the first time I've seen that gym. I understand the high school comments now! :smh:

It's definitely smaller than most high school gyms around here in the Hoosier Hysteria state. They don't get a lot of pub around here although their scores at least usually get mentioned. The program is respected but it's far from the top game in town. With IU in the top 10 (Bloomington is only an hour away), Butler in the top 15 (campus is about 10 minutes north of downtown), and Purdue off to a good start in the Big 10, they have a lot of competition. Not to mention all the professional sports, racing, and HS basketball fanatacism, they are just another team. That's definitely different than Fargo where NDSU is the primary game in town. Not bad, just different.

Thats the great part of D1 our Alum get a chance to see the teams play, not just the alums in the upper midwest!!!! Travel is tough but overall it should be great for exposure for the university.

For very personal, selfish reasons I was glad we ended up with the Summit/Gateway rather than Big Sky. I would even benefit from the Missouri Valley or MAC if we eventually move up to that level.

One of the reasons I enjoy living in Indianapolis is access to sporting events. In addition to all the great sports here in Central Indiana, I'm also within 4 hours of Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis, Chicago, and Milwaukee (and all the college towns in between them). Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Nashville are only 5 or 6 hours.

The better weather is also nice (I apologized to Leo Ringey when he was here last week that we were in the upper 40s). It's not the balmy south but 30s and 40s are much better than single digits and below zero.

Indy, some of the Gateway road games are within easy driving distance from Indianapolis, so I hope we see good representation at future games! Hopefully most of those 60-70 party attendees will think the same way too.

Tell the truth, now. How 'bout summertime? I'll help you out... it involves three digits fahrenheit with about 115 to 125 percent humidity.;)

I otherwise agree with you about Indianapolis - awesome place in an awesome location!

*last summer saw reds, then white sox play - witnessed 3 grand slams between those 2 games

They used to come from as far away as Michigan, Chicago, Peoria, and Cincinnati. Two things have caused a reduction though:

No UND game - some of the folks were UND alums
Satellite issues - the satellite technology the TV stations in ND were using was antequated and most bars didn't carry them any longer or weren't subscribed to the right channels...this led to many games where we had picture but not sounds, sound but no picture, no first half as we tried to find the signal or no game at all; people got tired of trying but getting no game; even this year with the game on FoxSports North was a challenge because it wasn't a channel carried by local satellite providers. I had to find a bar that had digital cable rather than a satellite...there aren't many.

I will definitely try to make at least one of the Gateway games each year. I officiate high school football so my Friday nights are booked. Depending on game time it may be difficult to get somewhere early Saturday afternoon.

Actually there is an odd summer anomaly here. In the 14 years I've lived here, it has never been higher than 96 degrees. It's almost like there's an invisible ceiling and then it stops. We get our share of 90+ and high humidity though. You are right about that. I can take that over 10 degrees though. It's great for the lake or a pool. Plus I work for an air conditioning manufacturer so the hotter the better.

I did a Jay Buckley (http://www.jaybuckley.com) baseball tour last summer and saw 7 games in 10 days - Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Pirates, Tigers, and Cubs plus 1 minor league game on Staten Island. Also saw Ripken/Gwynn HOF induction. Awesome experience and I highly recommend it! We almost saw A-Rod's 500th HR but he went 0for5 on a night when the Yankees scored 16 runs and hit a club record 8 HR. We did see Glavine's 300th win though at Wrigley.
