When: Friday 7:00 PM

TV: FSN Florida, Mid-Con Cable, and FSN(Tape Delay)

Where: Gainesville Florida, Stephan C. O'Connell Center(12,000)

http://www.gatorzone.com/facilities/images/baskw_court4.jpg

Opponent: Florida Gators of the SEC, who are back to back NCAA champs. The Gators lost their entire starting line-up from last season but will still assemble a very formidable line-up thanks in large part because of some stacked recruiting classes. Florida received votes in both the AP and Coaches Polls. The Gators are picked to finish 3rd in the eastern division of the SEC in the preseason media poll.

Last Meeting: First meeting between the two schools.

Projected Starting Line-Ups:

Florida
Jai Lucas, Freshman, Guard, DNP last season
Nick Calathes, Freshman, Guard, DNP last season
Walter Hodge, Junior, Guard, 5.7 points per game
Dan Werner, Sophomore, Forward, 1.8 points per game
Marreese Speights, Sophomore, Center, 4.1 points per game

NDSU
Ben Woodside, Junior, Gaurd, 16.4 points per game
Mike Nelson, Junior, Gaurd, 15.7 points per game
Brett Winkleman, Junior, Forward, 16.1 points per game
Michael Tveidt, Freshman, Forward, DNP last season
Lucas Moorman, Junior, Center, 4.9 points per game

Thoughts: This is an interesting early season match-up. On one hand you have a very experienced NDSU team lead by Saul Phillips in his first season as a head coach. On the other hand you have Florida, a young team lead by Billy Donovan. A head coach that was turning down NBA jobs in the offeseason.

I think this game will come down to how NDSU comes out of the gate. If the team hits some shots and gains some momentum things could really snownball for the Bison against a Florida team that might not be ready to handle some early season adversity. However, if NDSU comes out flat and Donovan's young team gets going, it will be a long game for Saul's squad.

Prediction: NDSU's veteran line-up has the potential to give Florida a big early season headache. Sure the Gators are the defending champs but you can't count out a team that has taken down Wisconsin and Marquette in consecutive seasons. NDSU's experience will keep them in the game throughout but in the end Florida's frontcourt will prove to be too much for an NDSU team that is still adjusting to life without Andre Smith. NDSU 67 Florida 79

This is gonna be a fun game, especially if Woody and the boys want to run with them.

I know its only Monday but isn't anyone else pumped for this game? These are the games that make DI fun, Florida has some athletes but we have a group of guys that can go out and play great team ball.

Anyone have any predictions?

I'm getting pretty excited for the game. But with how well our football team has been doing I think it is overshadowing basketball starting up. If the football team was around .500 everyone would be ready for basketball to start up because this is going to be a fun season.

I am very excited for this game as well, just imagine knocking off the two-time defending champs! I dont care who Florida lost from last year it would be a huge win! Can't wait to watch it!

Quote: Well they aren't better than OSU but they might be better than FSU now that they don't have Thornton. Some pretty high praise over there. Wish some of them would come on here.

Here is what a Gator fan recently posted regarding the NDSU game......

Billy asked the crowd to turn out and be loud.
Billy also said this is the toughest opening game team in all his years coaching.

Any idea if there will be radio stations picking this game up since it won't be on tv?

Wow! That's sounds like a huge compliment! I suppose I should look at the other openers they've had lately. Anyone look them up?

Billy Donovon's season openers since starting at UF in 1996/1997:
1996 - Central Florida
1997 - Nicholls State
1998 - Georgia Southern
1999 - Florida State
2000 - Florida State
2001 - Temple
2002 - Louisiana Tech
2003 - Montana State
2004 - Jacksonville
2005 - St. Peter's College
2006 - Samford

He coached at Marshall for the 1994/1995 and 1995/1996 seasons, but I'm having difficulty finding those schedules.

In 2001-2002 Temple went to the NIT final four and ended up taking 3rd place. If we are a more difficult opponent then Temple it is definitely high praise.

The game is being broadcast on FSN-Florida live and on FSN-North tape delayed after the gopher hockey game. I am sure it will also be streamed on the wday radio website.

I don't know if anyone noticed but Gardner Webb throttled top 25 Kentucky yesterday, so if we didn't have Florida's attention before you can bet we have it now.

Florida State twice and Temple huh? that's giving our boys some pretty good praise. this is a great sign that our program has definitely been on the right path since we decided to make the move to div. I. however, like NDSU student said that Gardner Web victory from last night may open up Florida's eyes if Donovan really doesn't have that much respect for us. this would be a great win to open our season as we hope to make our run to the NIT championship.
