Opponent: Florida Gators of the SEC, who are back to back NCAA champs. The Gators lost their entire starting line-up from last season but will still assemble a very formidable line-up thanks in large part because of some stacked recruiting classes. Florida received votes in both the AP and Coaches Polls. The Gators are picked to finish 3rd in the eastern division of the SEC in the preseason media poll.
Last Meeting: First meeting between the two schools.
Projected Starting Line-Ups:
Florida
Jai Lucas, Freshman, Guard, DNP last season
Nick Calathes, Freshman, Guard, DNP last season
Walter Hodge, Junior, Guard, 5.7 points per game
Dan Werner, Sophomore, Forward, 1.8 points per game
Marreese Speights, Sophomore, Center, 4.1 points per game
NDSU
Ben Woodside, Junior, Gaurd, 16.4 points per game
Mike Nelson, Junior, Gaurd, 15.7 points per game
Brett Winkleman, Junior, Forward, 16.1 points per game
Michael Tveidt, Freshman, Forward, DNP last season
Lucas Moorman, Junior, Center, 4.9 points per game
Thoughts: This is an interesting early season match-up. On one hand you have a very experienced NDSU team lead by Saul Phillips in his first season as a head coach. On the other hand you have Florida, a young team lead by Billy Donovan. A head coach that was turning down NBA jobs in the offeseason.
I think this game will come down to how NDSU comes out of the gate. If the team hits some shots and gains some momentum things could really snownball for the Bison against a Florida team that might not be ready to handle some early season adversity. However, if NDSU comes out flat and Donovan's young team gets going, it will be a long game for Saul's squad.
Prediction: NDSU's veteran line-up has the potential to give Florida a big early season headache. Sure the Gators are the defending champs but you can't count out a team that has taken down Wisconsin and Marquette in consecutive seasons. NDSU's experience will keep them in the game throughout but in the end Florida's frontcourt will prove to be too much for an NDSU team that is still adjusting to life without Andre Smith. NDSU 67 Florida 79
