North Dakota State middle linebacker Joe
Mays remained on the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List as the Sports Network added
San Diego defensive end Eric Bakhtiari, Montana State linebacker Bobby Daly and
Nicholls State safety Ladarius Webb were all added by the Sports Network on
Tuesday.
Those three join 13 other candidates on the revised list. The original list was
announced in August. The Buchanan watch list will undergo one more revision in early
November and the final ballot will be announced at the end of the season.
Mays has anchored a North Dakota State defense as the Bison have risen to No. 2
nationally in the Sports Network top 25 with a 6-0 record. Mays has 49 tackles and
5.5 tackles for loss, even though the Bison defense is designed to funnel ball
carriers into the middle, away from his position. He also has 2.5 sacks, four passes
defended, one forced fumble and one quarterback hurry.
North Dakota State (6-0), which sports the longest winning streak of 10 games in
NCAA Division I FCS or FBS, plays at the University of Minnesota (1-6) of the Big
Ten Conference at 11:07 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 20, in the Metrodome.
The winner of the 13th Buck Buchanan Award will be announced at the annual Sports
Network awards banquet on Dec. 13 in Chattanooga, Tenn. at the Marriott Hotel. The
Walter Payton Award, the Eddie Robinson Award and the Sports Network Cup will also
be awarded.
