Next Thursday in Rapid City, South Dakota State will seek permission from the South Dakota Board of Regents to move forward on a project that would likely be one of the most substantial, and certainly the most expensive, in athletic department history.

According to the budget and finance committee agenda posted Wednesday on the Regents’ Web site, SDSU will make a preliminary facility statement regarding a student-athlete development center. Basically, SDSU executive vice president for administration Michael Reger will request approval to develop a preliminary design for the first phase of a privately-funded facility that would house coaches offices, locker rooms and team rooms for the school’s football, baseball, softball, soccer, track and field, cross country and tennis programs, plus an academic center, a weight room, space for hospitality and exhibits and athletic training facilities.

The building would be located beyond the north end zone of Coughlin-Alumni Stadium and could eventually be expanded to include an indoor fieldhouse training facility.

Sounds great. Hope you're able to build a quality facility and quickly raise the money for it. Are the current offices/locker rooms/etc. spread out around the area?

Yah they are. Visiting team has to walk from the HPER center to the football field. Meetings are held in trailers, and that's were the officials are held for games. Most of the coordinators are housed in the HPER Center in close quarters. The current home locker room is a joke. We got half the money in place with minimal soliciting done so far. Next time the Bison come to Brookings there might be a change in scenary at the football stadium.

It's been a while since I've made the trip to SDSU, but how close could they build this thing next to the football field? I think it would be pretty cool if it could overlook the field, maybe have some suites in it or something.

Is it the north end zone that has their new uber-screen? if they get this done they would have a premier outdoor facility in the fcs. they need to make sure it has club seating or suits to really put them over the top. I'm all for our fellow conference members improving their facilities.

The scoreboard is on the south end. All that's in the way on the north end are a nice line of trees and the tailgate lot.
