A 5'8" 2008 commit from Omaha, Nebraska. Chose NDSU over MVC schools Creighton, Southern Illinois and Illinois State. She's considered a top-5 Neb recruit and just ran a state record in the 400M. She had track offers to two Big 12 schools. She's our first official 2008 commitment(Eckman is our first 2009).

Welcome Katie.

Excellent....we're getting some good team speed what with Plucker, Trekker and now Birkel. All were track standouts as well.

Birkel had major surgery on March 14(2006), using some of her shin bone to replace some damaged bone in her toe.

Ohhh, that hurts for a while. I can guarantee she wasn't doing many stretches for a week or three following that surgery.

Season preview of the Lincoln schools.

Birkel’s strong summer performance with the Shooting Stars led to a Division I scholarship. Larsen sees a stark difference in her game from a year ago.

“Katie’s the most improved player we have, and people in the state will be surprised where she’s at compared to last year,’’ Larsen said. “She’s improved in every area and her confidence level is way up.’’

Catching up with Katie Birkel.

This kid will be hard to keep on the bench next season. She's a medalist in track like Plucker and Trekker so we've upped the speed in the backcourt. She's also having a break out senior season.

Katie is leading the Lincoln area girls in several statistical categories:

#1 in scoring with 16.7 ppg
#5 in field goal % at 46.1%
#2 in 3 pt FGs made with 20 (shooting 35.1%)
#9 in rebounds with 5.1 per game
#5 in assists with 2.9 average

She lead her state ranked #1 team in scoring last night:

Also, in one game last week:

Southeast 76, Fremont 19

The Class A top-ranked Knights tied a state record with 15 three-pointers, a record previously set by Southeast in 1999. Katie Birkel hit a school-record eight three-pointers, scoring 26 points.

She shoots the long ball like that next year, I think she starts.

That would be unfortunate if she can't redshirt, but the way it's looking currently that may not even be an option.

WHy unfortunate?

Big picture, long term benefit. Just think if Miles hadn't redshirted most of our current men's team. They would be done the end of this season instead of being a very seasoned team that should be in the running next year. That and the fact this isn't high school ball. If I were a player coming in, it sure would be nice to get a year of transition under your belt before you're thrown into the fire. Besides, then we get them for 5 years.

Excerpt:

Pain is just part of the deal when you’re the younger sister and you want to play football and basketball in the back yard with your four older brothers.

That may be why Katie Birkel played almost an entire basketball game her freshman year with a broken wrist. Or why she was running around for a year with a cracked bone in her big toe, an injury that two years ago required an elaborate medical procedure.

Does anyone think there would be a chance for your two recruits to have new thoughts due to the fact that Amy is leaving now? I don't know who is in charge of recruiting, but thought you all might have some knowledge...

BTW, Congrats on the 2nd place finish in the Summit. That is a long ways from where you started and it is a heck of an accomplishment for the shake-ups the program had throughout the year.

Congrats to the Jacks on blowing away the field and good luck in achieving the WNIT crown.

Regarding Birkel and Vigil...I don't know there motivations for choosing NDSU but I imagine there is the possibility that they could ask to have their LOIs rescinded. Also, there were a couple of other recruits that SU was reportedly in on for the late signing period. Hopefully someone is staying in touch with them during the transition.

From what I understood, Amy will continue to perform head coach duties until a new coach is hired. I am sure calls have already been made to those early signees along with any other girls that were being recruited. From past experience in coaching changes, there is usually no recruits lost in a coaching transition. The women's basketball program at NDSU will continue to be strong under the new coach.

As I recall, Vigil is coming for an education in Criminal Justice. Want's to get that degree and then move back to New Mexico. If we can get a coach like Coach Hinterstocker, we'll be rolling. Molly has put a lot of time on the road recruiting JC's. I think we'll be just fine with out recruits.

I think you will be fine too Dormie, but without any recruits that might be a tougher task to accomplish. :);)

I really think Ruley found a good one in Birkel from Nebraska. She seems to be athletic in the mold of many of the folks AJ has recruited the past few years here at SDSU and a quality scorer and leader. She should be a good one.

Jackrabbit1979, like you've never misspelled a word. I ment with our recruits, not with out recruits. Enjoy it while it lasts. We'll be back. It only takes one good class to turn a program around. SDSU has it going now, but what will he do with 16 players in 2 years. I guess they don't all stay though.

Cripes...it was a joke, hence the smiley and wink. I knew what you were saying, I just found it amusing the way it came out with the error.

I'm pretty sure in both of my comments on the subject I commended Amy or the program for a job well done this year in games and recruiting. What she did in the Summitt with the turmoil and talent (or lack there of) she had this season was really great.

What are you referring to in regards to 16 players? Am I missing something?

DORMIE
03-05-2008, 08:21 PM
Sorry I missed the smiles.....According to the program, SDSU has 2 seniors, 4 each FR, SO & JR so they would have 12 returning plus 3 recruits and I understand there is the altime best SD player as a transfer. Also have 3 coming in in 2009. No matter how you add them up, it's a lot of girls to keep happy sitting on the bench as you usually play 10.

We have 14 on the roster right now including 2 seniors, and 4 in each other class. We lose two seniors, and add three high school recruits for 2008(maybe this is where your mistake was as Jill Young, the all time leading scorer in SD history, is already on the roster redshirting this year due to transfer rules). That would put the roster at 15.

The next year we lose 4 Juniors and we currently have 3 signed for that class. That would put the roster at 14 right now for the 2009-10 season. We have the opportunity to sign one more student athlete here.

No matter how I add them up, it always seems like we are at 15 or less. I agree in that it is a lot of girls to keep happy, but AJ seems to do a pretty good job of recruiting athletes that buy into the team concept and he plays a deeper bench than almost anyone in the country.

Will we lose some girls in the next few years? Probably, but I doubt it is going to be any of the ten that are seeing serious minutes right now and will make SDSU a better team in the next 3 years than we have been this season.

Blowing away the rest of the conference during your inaugural stint will help quell any concerns about playing time.
