Freshman running back Joe Trombetta, UC Davis' leading rusher and receiver, has a sprained ankle and will miss the Aggies' Great West Football Conference opener Saturday at North Dakota State.

Aggies coach Bob Biggs said Trombetta was injured in last Saturday's 34-14 loss at San Jose State. He continued to play, but the ankle didn't respond to treatment and was too sore to practice on this week.

"Joe won't make the trip, but we have a lot of confidence in Brandon Tucker and Demario Warren to step in," Biggs said Thursday.

Trombetta has rushed for 525 yards and five touchdowns and has 33 receptions for 282 yards and two touchdowns, so the injury couldn't have come at a worse time entering a game against the Bison, ranked No. 2 in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA).

That is too bad...I would have liked to have seen him perform. Looks like the kid has a great future though.

Ouch! That one does hurt the Aggies. Tough spot for a new person to step into with the atmosphere, Bison D, etc going against you.

That is to bad, the worst part of this news is that we probably won't have game film on his replacements. No worries though I guess, they have our film and it probably won't help them. :D :D :D

More seriously though, I hope he is able to get back for their next game, I believe the have Cal-Poly at home next week.

We all were looking forward to seeing this kid in action. He sounds like he is going to be a quality Great West runningback for years to come. Well, if he is going to short change us and deprive us of watching him run this week, the least he can do is get well soon so that he can give the rest of the Great West fits.
