When recruits get inside that Dome for these first two games -- games that will be rockin' atmospheres, near sell-outs, both on TELEVISION (how many FCS schools can say they have their first two games on regional tv infront of millions) and coupled with our facilities ...

Awfully tough to turn down a place like NDSU and Fargo. All the amenities of a city, great campus atmosphere, good school, bigtime college fball atmosphere, and a program with guys being looked at by the league!? AND OUR INCREDIBLE FAN BASE?!! Who else at our level has that kind of infrastructure? The level of recruits we bring in will only get better. To quote the words of the great 70s band BTO -- You ain't seen nothing yet!!! I can't wait!!!

Only one week until tailgating!!!

just wondering if we have a list of guys we are offering or are interested in...would be nice to keep tabs on those kids to see how their JR and SR year of HS football is going....its fun to watch the kids develop in HS and transition their way to college

I'll have to check out Dan Offerman this fall, since I live all of a mile from Roseville HS. I like that we are getting some early commitments, but as always more would still be better.

Junior lineman Josh Campion - younger brother of Pete who had to play as a true freshman but still made it to the NFL.

Thanks Tony for the link. Former BISON Wayne Schluchter is mentioned in the article. He helps out with the Tech Program. Wayne has an investment company in St. Cloud. I know he will steer kids to the Bison. He brings players up for summer camps at NDSU from Tech also.

A new name for the list: Horicon (WI) QB, 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior QB Mike Michalovitz. Apparently NDSU was one of the first to start recruiting him.

Wayne Schluchter is pretty well conected to NDSU as he is a member of the Bison Sports Hall Of Fame and is on the Executive Cimmittee of the NDSU Alumni Board Of Directors.

I got to see some of the St. Cloud Tech vs Sartell game last night. The kicker from Tech seemed quite impressive. He made 3 fairly mid-range to long field goals, came up short on a 54 yard attempt, all this in a game that appeared to have constant rainfall. The announcers thought that the Gophers should look at him. In the kicks that I saw, he had great height in the kicks. They were certainly not the type to be blocked, which seems rather important after last year's Gopher game. Is he on the Bison radar? Also saw Morris in the game -- he was impressive.

Was Morris the one with 2 interceptions?

I believe Wayne coaches the dbacks, at the least, and may be D coordinator.

Does anyone know if NDSU is going after Josh Horner from South? The kid is something else, last night he went for 300 yards on 20 carries and 4 TDs.

Yes, they are talking to Josh. His mother is my Customer Service Representative. They attended the SF Austin Game and will be giong again to the UC Davis Game. His mother thinks that they may want him in defense as Coach Garza was talking to him. She says that he loves to hit. Maybe he'd be a good SS, play special teams and run back kicks.

Jarid jackson is continuing to recieve numerous letters per week and Vigan has called him 3 times this season. You are allowed 1 phone call per week. I am Jarids dad and have somewhat followed the bison since i was in high school. We have had numerous family members play for the Bison over the years. It has been a while since our family had someone play up there so i am hoping that the bison offer him. I still have a lot of family members up there that are are season ticket holders. I have always loved the area and I think it would be a good fit for Jarid.

We plan on coming to at least one game, there are other schools that are trying to get him to a game also so we are trying to work it all out and next weekend might be a good idea.

Thanks for sharing the info.:)

EVERYBODY ELSE!!!!- Please remember there are compliance rules in effect. We'd hate to see a potential Bison Student-Athlete lose eligibility due to something posted on a message board. Please read -The Compliance Guide For Boosters (http://www.gobison.com//pdf6/79469.pdf?SPSID=12293&SPID=714&DB_OEM_ID=2400) if you're unsure what you can or cannot do.

if you have ever given a penny to Team Makers, don't say anything about Bison athletics to any student-athlete under the age of 19.

The NCAA are sticklers for any rules relating to recruiting, no matter how minor or unintentional the violations may be, so be careful. No need to get the athletic department into any unnecessary trouble.

There are still a lot of undecided top players in Minnesota. Right now only eight of ESPN.com's top 30 Minnesota recruits have commited (including Bourne-Franklin to NDSU). Admittedly a couple of the upper echelon guys are considering big time BCS conference schools and we won't have much of a shot, but if we can snag a few of these guys we will be in great shape.

Okay, this may be a dumb question, but here goes.

I have a nephew and a niece, and I am a team maker. If they were of the caliber to play for the Bison, does that mean I can't talk to, give gifts to or other wise contact my own relatives?

Just curious.

As long as it's not encouraging them to select NDSU, you should be fine. Might be a gray area if you provide them with employment.

There are unofficial visits to the games at home also, but I am pretty sure there is contact with the coaches, seeing how the players are on the sidelines prior to the game.

I'm guessing that contact is not allowed at away games, so as not to interfere with recruiting by the home team. Sounds fair to me.

Here is ESPN.com's analysis of Jarid Jackson:

Jarid Jackson
ILB | 6'1" 219
Scouts Grade: 64
Evaluation: Jackson is a physical linebacker who should provide scheme versatility playing both the middle and outside positions. He possesses a solidly-built frame and utilizes it well filling at the point of attack. Displays toughness, effective hand technique and upper-body strength when employed on the line of scrimmage; he does a nice job stringing plays out to the sideline. We like this kid?s motor chasing sideline-to-sideline, and he delivers a good pop on contact when he closes in on ball carriers. Flashes potential in his coverage skill. Shows good route awareness and displays skill jamming and riding routes. While he is productive at the high school level, we have concerns about his speed and overall fluidity when projecting for Division 1 college. Currently lacks the sideline-to-sideline speed needed to chase down skilled ball carriers and the change-of-direction quickness needed to mirror them in space. Utilizes his raw strength in the lateral traffic, but lacks the athleticism needed to avoid cutoff blocks and the burst to hit the run seam inside out. Needs to polish up crossover steps in coverage and drop with more bend in his hips. Jackson might continue to physically develop and make the move down to defensive end. Should provide good special teams depth as well.

A poster on the SDSU board believes that Tyrell Kool, a RB from Yankton, has verballed to the Bison.
http://sdsufans.com/board/showthread.php?p=64989#post64989

Here's a scouting report: http://nebraska.scout.com/3/CampCountdown.html
"Kool is simply a wonderful athlete, with a great upside and two years to develop into the position he’ll play in college. That’s up in the air as he’s got the versatility to play a variety of skill positions on the field. If he can gain a couple of inches and hit that coveted 6 foot mark or even more, that ups his stock dramatically. He’s already a solid athlete, but with so much time to develop, he could be another gem in the state of South Dakota."

We went to the game saturday and it was really cool to be down on the field when they turned the lights off and started pumping up the music. I have been there many times before for visits but never for a game. My old thoughts on the dome was that they play on the old style turf, its cramped and probably hot (which it was for the other visits) and small. But after this visit my vision of the dome is totally changed. The fans really get the excitement going before the game and they keep it up the whole game. I looked at my son while the music was jamming and the players were running on the field and he had a smile on his face, I could tell he really liked it. My view has totally changed and you the fans did it for me. I have been to the gophers games for unoficial visits and it is no where near as exciting, the recruits are ushered off the field before the players come out for the game so they dont get the game day feel that the bison provided for thier recruits. The only thing I would say about this evaluation is that he was evaluated as an Inside Linebacker which he has never played up untill this season. he always played on the outside, usually head up on the TE.

Hey, someone needs to "take a look" at Aaron Langan at Thief River Falls, Minn. (Lincoln HS). Last Fri. he scored all 3 tds from his RB positon in a win over Duluth Central, 21 - 20. He's fast and strong, his dad is an awesome athlete too, play WR for und. See box score :

THIEF RIVER FALLS 21,

DULUTH CENTRAL 20

Aaron Langan scored three touchdowns, including sprints of a 75 and 47 yards, and the Prowlers continued their unbeaten season in winning the North Country Conference nightcap at PSS.

Langan had 167 yards on 11 carries, speeding away from the Central secondary on his long scoring runs, as second-ranked Thief River Falls (6-0, 5-0) took sole possession of the conference lead. He also scored on a 3-yard run and added a two-point conversion for a 20-point night.

Ethan Magstadt, Maple Grove, MN, his family is from Bismarck. His uncle, who still lives in Bismarck, says the Bison have a chance of getting him. He's also a smart kid, so some of the Ivy schools have been hitting him pretty hard, as well as the Goph's. From what I hear he's a tough kid who will help the running game in the future with his blocking and running.

Scouts Grade: 62
Position Rank: FB #56
Considering: 1-Minnesota

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Evaluation: Magstadt shows promise and quality skill at the fullback position. He possesses an athletic, well-built frame that allows him to remain versatile as a runner and blocker. He is best running down hill, taking the quick hitter north-south with good body lean. He does a nice job following his blocks through traffic and taking what the defense gives him. Magstadt will pick up the tough yards and flashes adequate straight-line speed and short-area burst. He has adequate blocking ability, can seal off the edge on the sprint pass and will step up to stalemate linebackers on isolation run plays. While solid as a lead blocker, he struggles with his effectiveness. He lacks the bulk, strength and leverage to knock bigger defenders off the run lane. He has limited power in his hips when attacking and often takes the hit instead of delivering it. At times, he runs a bit east-west and does not possess the lateral quickness and vision to be effective. Hhis running ability is limited without an open vertical seam. We have concerns that his lack of size and explosiveness will hurt his ability as a runner and blocker at the next level. Magstadt still has a lot of physical developing to do which could dictate his ability to play at the next level.

Notes: No notes available at this time.

Greg Reid, a linebacker from Milwaukee King, 6-2, 250, gave WMU his verbal earlier this year but then they signed another linebacker and let him know that they might not have an opening for him come signing day. Unsurprisingly, Greg is looking around again. NDSU had previously offered him so maybe the offer is still available, maybe not.

I think it would be kinda hard for ESPN to cover FCS recruiting. Many FCS schools don't get commitments before/during the season. Plus many FCS recruits are kids that are right on the cusp of getting a FBS offer but for whatever reason they didn't get it. I'm sure they are already covering some of these kids but we won't know if they are a FCS recruit until after a couple FBS schools pass on them.

According to Superprep.com (Scout affiliate).... NDSCS DT Kyle Richardson (6'4 340 according to the NDSCS football site) has verbally committed to the Bison. Anyone have any sources to verify this? Has anyone seen him play?

Nice find - I've added him to the list.

We've had great success picking out players at at NDSCS. Namely RIchard Lewis, Christian Dallas, and Alvin Robertson. Last year some of us wanted us to sign the 2 running backs at NDSCS. I was big on Brian McNeil (Fargo South) and others were not. Now he's a superstar at Nebraska Omaha and is the 2nd leading rusher in D2. Normally I'd be bummed out but he's not any better than Paschall, who gives us 3 years, not 2. We should never let a local player of his caliber play somewhere else. Same with guys like Solum.

This new guy - I don't know anything about him - but Bohl is rarely if ever wrong and he's a big boy at 6' 4'' and 330 lbs! I'm thinkin' he's not an edge speed rusher.

I see the team our commit, Preston Evans from Sioux Falls Roosevelt, completely dominated their opening round game 69-7 on Tuesday. I didn't see an individual stats but the team they were playing only managed to get 140ish total yards on offense.

Yeah, speed rusher he won't be, but if he can occupy two blockers, clog the middle and push the pocket a bit that is plenty good for me.

Michael McAtee from North Prairie HS (trying to find which town right now - I'll update the first post when I do), 6'0, 200 RB/LB.

Just a blurb in Dickinson Press about how he's going to NDSU in a story about his team winning a semi-final game in which he rushed for 250+ yards and had 350 or so yards of total offense.

North Prairie is a co-op between Rolla and Rollette, two former powerhouses in 9-man football. They play 11-man this year and are doing quite well. I'd heard alot about McAtee but I didn't know he was of this caliber.

I imagine we are interested in him as a LB/DB right?

Hehe, I don't even try to guess anymore. McAtee could play a number of different positions. Kind of a coincidence having two Rolla kids on the team at once since I don't remember any before Vandal.

Note: At this time last year, NDSU had *NO* known commitments. We didn't get the first one until November 21st.

Bison_Pride
10-29-2007, 08:13 PM
If he's already 200+ lbs. he could easily be a fullback. With the off-season training program, he could easily be another Tyler Roehl type runner.

There is a little talk on him here, http://www.northdakotapreps.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1009&st=0&sk=t&sd=a but I don't think that many people have seen him play, the ones that have, say he's the best.

That topic just covers class AA, so there is no talk of Josh Horner, but McAtee's coach says he is the best in the state, including all the class AAA schools.

The reason I assumed we were interested in his defensive skills is that we already have a lot of young guys at RB and FB, but you can never have too many I guess.

Didn't we have a commitment shortly after the Minnesota game last year? I think it was Garrett Johnson the 6'5" 240 lb DE that had an offer from Northern Illinois. I think he was the first but I thought that came long before November 21st.

I thought Garrett Johnson commmitted earlier too, but the main recruiting thread from last year said November - turns out msvpcpa is right, I did some searching and WDAY reported Johnson's verbal on 10/27 last year. Eddie Beson came next on 11/15 and Austin Richard a couple days later.

Exactly my point........recruiting is the only reason that makes sense why SDSU would be so much against televising the game. You would think they would want to roll the dice as they have near even odds of winning the game. Could pull off a big recruiting gain........but the risk of a loss might just leave them in worse shape.

2008 verbals reported by the media:

High School
07/24/2007 Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane, 6'2, 200, Bloomington Kennedy (MN)
08/03/2007 Preston Evans, LB, 5'11, 215, Sioux Falls Roosevelt (SD)
08/03/2007 Dan Offerman, DT, 6'3, 265, Roseville, MN

Transfer(s)
10/24/2007 Kyle Richardson, DT, 6'4, 310, NDSCS, Circle Pines, MN (Centennial)

According to Kolpack's blog, Offerman is targeted as a DE and not a DT:

NDSU football recruit Danny Offerman had a successful senior year at Roseville in the Twin Cities. He's 6-4, 260 pounds and is targeted as a defensive end at NDSU. He had 90 tackles (25 solo, 48 assisted), 10 tackles of lost yardage, seven QB sacks, caused three fumbles and recovered an incredible seven fumbles. That despite teams having a tendency to run away from him, said head coach Chris Simdorn.

The former Bison quarterback said his team designed most of its offense around the tight end Offerman either as a receiver or a lead blocker. He had 20 receptions for 380 yards and four touchdowns. He had 20 carries for 81 yards and one touchdown.

He was also the team's punter averaging 35 yards a boot.

Does anyone know which is correct?

jeffdaryl3rd
11-16-2007, 10:31 PM
I'm not sure if the coaches are targeting him as an end or tackle, but I think a good parallel might be a guy like Frick. I believe he was 255-260-ish when he was signed as a defensive end, but he put on bulk in the weight room and moved inside to tackle. Again, just purely based on position/size as I haven't seen him play.

From Wisfootball.net...
Milwaukee King senior linebacker Greg Reid (6-3, 251) recently took an official visit to North Dakota State University and in his words was “blown away.” Reid raved about the visit saying, “They are a great football team. They have one of the best facilities in the nation.” An all-conference selection as a junior, Reid had 93 tackles, three sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception last season. He is ranked as WisFootball.net's No. 11 overall prospect and No. 3 linebacker in the class of 2008 ...

From what I've heard, Reid is the real deal... a tackling machine with very good speed. He original verbally committed to Western Michigan, but decided the better of it. Also has heard form Iowa State, UNLV, Wyoming, and Central Michigan. I believe the Bison have offered a full ride.

A very good way of keeping up with Bison recruiting in Wisconsin is reading the articles on Wisfootball.net. I know I read the articles every day.

In the blurbs for the MN all-state ballotting they mention the following students as having some level of interest from NDSU:

Collin Stinogel, WR/OLB, St. Cloud Tech: 6-3, 200, 38 tackles and three interceptions. A likely candidate for offensive player of the year in the Central Lakes Conference. A two-year starter who had 35 catches for 524 yards, a 15.0 average, with 3 TDs for the 9-1 Tigers.

Jordan Eaton, TE/DE St. Paul Highland Park. 6'5" 235 lbs. 56 tackles, 6 sacks, 14 TFL, 1 blocked kick, 2 fumble recoveries, 4 pass breakups. Also had 23 pancakes and 0 sacks allowed on offense

Eric Dirkes, OL/DL SR, Albany: 6-2, 290, also a defensive tackle. Top offensive lineman for an 11-1 Class 3A team that is in the state semifinals at the Metrodome. Excellent strength and size. A co-captain, he's the lead blocker for an offense that averages 300 yards rushing per game. Also a power-hitting first baseman/designated hitter in baseball

Reid committed to NDSU on Monday.

Yeah, I noticed that as well but since it is on a messageboard you do have to take that kind of talk with a grain of salt. However, if it is true he won't see much playing time because there will be some good competition at the LB/DE/TE positions.

Further proof we have a long way to go when a few players are leaning torward Duluth and Minnesota State. We would beat those teams by 50 points. I hope it has more to do with academics or local ties. More reason to expand TV coverage and marketing into Minnesota. I think we're headed in the right direction.

I don't think they have offered any of those guys yet, but they are probably somewhere on the radar. If history is any strategy the Bison will target the in-state and local kids that have the talent to play, and offer them. Then go after the kids that are waiting on Big 10 teams to offer but ultimately don't. And then work the Jr. college route for areas of need that it's hard to get top quality recruits here for, such as DE and CB.

These are probably just good players they have in mind, in case the guys they really want, do get the Big 10 offers.

Reid has impressive credentials. I think he's about the #7 rated overall college prospect in the entire state of Wisconsin. (#3 LB) He said he was "blown away" by the facilities at NDSU.

My hunch is that the new BB arena, and an upgraded BSA would also help potential football recruits, and their parents, believe that all they are coming to a university that is first class in all areas of athletics.

The one thing I noticed at all of our games this year (at all the home games) was the lack of a pass rush. Defensive line is just a hard position to transition to. So much you change from HS to college, and definitely from college to the pros. I thought Joe L. did a nice job, but we lacked a quality and consistent pass rush on opponents. Remember, Justin Frick and Craig Dahl should have been Seniors this year. The 2007 Bison would have been completely different with these two players on defense. Now, jump ahead four years and think about how happy we will all be that we had the luxury of redshirting the entire 2007 recruiting class.

He seems like a project and didn't get serious looks from big schools. He was 2nd team all conference as a Jr at defensive end AND 2nd team all conference as a Sr at linebacker so he's good at both positions. He's a solid athelete with some good upside. Threw shot put and is strong. According to the Forum, the Bison want him as a defensive end.

It makes sense to put him at end because we're loaded at linebacker with Preston Evans and Reid along with Matt Anderson, Tyler Henry, Luke Senger, Eddie Beson to go with current starters Maersh and Humber.

Apparently NDSU has visited an Illinois pro-style QB named Mark Tolzien from Fremd High School in Palatine, IL (NW Chicago). Er, at least they made it to his HS to get tape, not sure if they talked or not.

Rivals lists Boston College, Iowa, Wisconsin, and a bunch of Ivy League schools as having interest (Iowa and Wisconsin, for sure, are in touch quite a bit). His older brother plays for the Badgers.

I count five HS QBs that NDSU is looking at - of course, it's probable that not all of them are being recruited as QBs. Anyway, this is the first Illinois recruit I've heard in connection with NDSU but if they were there, they were probably in a lot of other places.

RB Montez Hatten 5'7 178 Anderson, South Carolina (Westside HS)

Hatten is Westside's all-time leading rusher with over 5000 yards rushing and 54 touchdowns in his career. He may be short in stature but runs very hard and has great field vision. Hits the hole fast and has good breakaway speed. Gaudy numbers against AAAA competition should earn him a serious look from mid-major programs looking for a strong prospect who deserves much more attention. Highly underrated prospect.

There's a smaller school QB in Nebraska I kind of hope they talk to too. Transferred from North Carolina or something. Unfortunately that's all I can remember.

Another reported offer: Tim Sauer, OL, 6'8, 263, Rosemount, MN.

UNI offered too and Colorado just flew him out to visit. He plays basketball too.

If you can read the articles we've been linking to, I think you'll be impressed not only by what good athletes these guys are - it really sounds like NDSU is going after good, solid kids.

thanks tony for the info! sounds like he could put a lot of weight on him if he wanted to play on the O line...any possibility of DE seeing as he is an athlete?

I'm not 100% sure but I think he's related to Craig Sauer, who played for the Gophers and Vikings and is now the defensive coordinator of the FM Liberty football team. http://fargomoorheadliberty.com/coaches.html Hopefully he can persuade him to come here!

I hadn't seen Tyrel's name mentioned here but was told that he was getting steady interest (and it sounds like an offer below) from the bison. A little slight, but supposedly has true 4.4 speed.

That makes two of SDSU's four verbals (Thomas O'Brien, Winona Cotter) that chose SDSU over NDSU...I didn't think that was possible Burgandy? (Just Kidding...I don't want to get into a smack war here).

From the Sioux Falls Argus Leader:

SDSU lands Yankton’s Kool
Yankton’s Tyrel Kool made a verbal commitment on Sunday to play football at South Dakota State.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior was a Class AA all* state pick at defensive back, but is projected to play running back for the Jackrabbits. Although limited to 80 carries this season due to a high ankle sprain, Kool finished his prep career with 276 rushes for 2,153 yards and 23 scores. Bucks coach Arlin Likness described Kool – who chose SDSU over rival North Dakota State – as perhaps the quickest back he’s coached in a 28-year career.

“South Dakota State was just the place where I felt like I belonged,” said Kool, also all-state in the 300 hurdles. “I like to think I canbea difference maker.” The Jacks also got a verbal from Jon Fick of Boyden- Hull/Rock Valley, former SDSU standout Paul Keiser’s alma mater. The 6-5, 250-pound Fick was named Class 2A first team all-state as a defensive lineman by The Iowa Sports Connection, but will likely play on the offensive line in college.

That's a pretty amazing statement by Likness. He is a great coach and has had great atheletes play at Yankton throughout the years. And if Yankton has been known for anything over the past 30 years, it's for it awesome running game.

If I remember the argument correctly, and I don't want to put words in Burgundy;s mouth, I think he was saying that SDSU will never win a recruiting battle over NDSU if it was an North Dakota kid. He was previously stating how we have went into So Dakota and taken some really solid kids, and that would never happen in North Dakota. My guess is that kid chose SDSU over NDSU because he has no chance to play running back at NDSU in his entire career. We have too much depth at running back with DJ and V'lander both redshirting last year. I don't blame him if he wanted to play, he had to go to SDSU. Congrats to SDSU for signing an in state kid.

That's cool. If your implying SDSU is getting better players than NDSU than you must be smoking something. We only sign a couple of players per year out of South Dakota for a reason. There are not that many. I'm sure he's great but this kid would have been lucky to see the field with our loaded backfield. It doesen't mention him getting offers from a lot of other schools? Who knows.. maybe he only got a walk on offer from NDSU or a partial scholorship. Besides we already got the best player out of the state in Preston Evans.

I was wondering if the position had anything to do with it too. But if the kid is as impressive as Arlen Likness says, it would be a little foolish for NDSU to not give him a look at RB even through we are loaded at the position. For those not in the know, Likness has been part of, arguable the most successful high school football program in SD history as either assistant coach or head coach for the past 30 years. I wouldn't take a comment of his like that lightly.

From what I have heard the Bison weren't all that high on him. They have some other qb's ahead of him on their list.

Is Dakota Priaire 9-man? If so, it's a pretty tough jump going from playing QB in 9-man to college QB. The defenses you read as a 9-man QB are pretty simple. Still sounds like a heck of a player though.
