Apparently Punky has the boys in basic training. It'll be interesting to see if that works. From the Forum blog:
The reports (http://www.twincities.com/gophers/ci_6616224?nclick_check=1) out of Gopherville in the last month or two include several of the Les Steckel variety. The football players are in basic training and there is no questioning who the general is.
The head coach better be careful. This isn't the '60s with Buck Nystrom (former NDSU assistant) halfway down your spine. We're in a different era -- one where kids don't always subscribe to the tough-love-24/7 theory. Nineteen straight days of practice is a lot.
Maybe it's the way for the coach to compensate for a lack of Big Ten talent at this young point in his regime. Steckel was famous for his boot-camp ways when he took over the Minnesota Vikings. It didn't work.
This is Tim Brewster's first head coaching job. Until he gets a year or two under his belt, Gopher fans can only assume he knows what he's doing.

Hes going to find out who REALLY wants to be there. Those that cant hack it will leave then those scholorships will be available to his recruits.
There is one thing---even if they dont win many games they will be in shape. But I see them to be a much better team this coming year. PL

Dont quite understand it either except for a backhanded cut.
But many a game is lost to less talented teams who are well coached and in better shape on any given sunday. PL

Whomever wrote the piece is going on hearsay. I was at SJU on both Friday and Saturday. It was an intense practice, but nothing out of the ordinary. Drills and conditioning. True, the players are in incredible shape, because they worked all summer with their strength and conditioning coach on a strenuous weightlifting and conditioning routine. Some of these guys gained 25+ pounds of pure muscle since the spring practice and these weights have not been updated on the roster. They are a different team, physically.

It was from Kolpack on the Forum blog. For what's it worth SI picked them to finish 0-8 in the Big 10 and 4-8 overall.

Well, it is to be expected since they lost their starting QB, TE and WR and have a new coaching staff, so there are a lot of unknowns for the "experts". Kolpack should attend a practice before he writes Les Steckel references.

Why, so he can laugh @ the "special forces?" Maybe see the guy who jumps off sides running around with Punk's famous "white flag?" Possibly hes scared of being ran over by that huge team who has "all gained 25 lbs of pure muscle over the summer?"

Based on last year's results, you could make an arguement that the Gophers have "lower tier" Big 10 talent. Until the team proves otherwise, it would be difficult to compare talent levels with Mich, OSU, Wisc., and Penn St.

Otherwise, he is no better than PH, making statements and claims based on other's observations.

PH, this is for you, regarding Harry Adams, from Scout:

"Track star who's playing first year of high school football as a junior. Ran 10.2 100m as a sophomore. One of the fastest people on the planet for his age group."

He now lists the Gophers as his #1 team over Florida, Auburn and Florida State and may commit in the next couple of weeks. Yeah, Brewster cannot recruit worth a darn.
